The ‘Gwent’ Cross-Country League is the mainstay of Westbury Harriers’ cross-country season. There are 5 matches through the winter, including a home fixture in December. It’s a large but friendly league, and there is always a good turn-out from Westbury Harriers in all age groups (ages 9 – 75). Last year, out of the five junior boys age categories, the club had two team wins, a second and fourth.

Athletes race as individuals and as part of their age group team. Points are awarded after every race depending on position and at the end of the season you can see where you come both individually and as a team. To count in the overall League juniors need to compete in 4 of the 5 races (which must include the last meet in Swansea), but you can still take part even if you only want to do one or two races. There is a match fee of £1 to pay on the day. The club has a tent at each meet which is well stocked with snacks and treats for after the race and there is a great team spirit with athletes of all ages up to V65+ taking part. All apart from the final fixture are on a Saturday.

The dates are:
12th Oct – Cardiff
9th Nov – Pembrey
7th Dec – Blaise Castle
8th Feb – Chepstow
1st March – Swansea

For all the info and if you would like to get involved please contact:
Girls Team Managers Jason Michael or Jayne Pemble: manager.girls@westburyharriers.co.uk

Athletes in the U13 age group and over will also need to get in touch with Ellen, our membership secretary, who will help you register with EA for ‘other discipline’(i.e not track). The team managers at Westbury will also help you with this process.

We are looking for six U11 girls (schools years 4 and 5) and six U11 boys, as well as four U13 girls (school years 6 and 7) and four U13 boys to be part of our new Sportshall teams!

We are going to be competing this winter in the Gloucestershire Sportshall League with teams from Cheltenham Harriers, Gloucester AC, Forest of Dean, Tewkesbury and Dursley.

The dates are:
Sunday 10th November – Rednock School, Dursley
Sunday 24th November – Brockworth Sportshall Centre
Sunday 15th December – Cheltenham Leisure Centre

The U11s match is in the morning (approx 9.45am – 12.45pm) and the U13s match is in the afternoon (approx 1pm – 4pm).

Our Sportshall team manager is Jodie Dale, who many of you will know from Quadkids. If you would like to take part please email her ASAP on jodiedalexx@gmail.com, or see her at the track, and let her know what dates you will be available. It is likely that parents will be asked to get stuck in to help at the competitions!

Don’t worry if you haven’t done any Sportshall before – our academy coaches will ensure that our team members have a chance to get familiar with the events during the weekly academy sessions.

A quick reminder: Sportshall is an indoor form of track and field athletics for junior athletes taking place during the winter months in the warmth of a sports hall. Athletes take part in lots of different events such as standing long jump/triple jump, speed bounce, sprint races, shot put, obstacle relay, hurdles, javelin etc. It’s a lot of fun and a friendly competitive opportunity for those involved, giving a focus for the quieter early winter months. (For more info on Sportshall go to https://www.sportshall.org.uk)
