Officials truly are the beating heart of athletics and running and at the heart of all the action.
With points won (and lost) at league matches, due to number of club officials provided, it is vital we have a large bank of volunteers to cover the competition demands of an entire season.
England Athletics wants to inspire Officials by providing direct support through the track & field and/or endurance journey.
Both journeys benefit from structured qualifications, practical competition experiences and ongoing development opportunities throughout. Its never been simpler to get into Officiating.
Whether you’re beginning your journey as an official, or an existing official looking to progress, there are qualifications to suit everyone.

There are many Officiating roles that need to SAFELY be fulfilled as a Track/Field Official at competitions, including:
- Starter
- Timekeeper
- Photo finish equipment
- Measurement of throws/jumps
- Retrieval of throwing implements
- Setting up equipment (hurdles/implements/measuring)
- Ensuring rules are adhered to.
In order to gain accreditation as an Official, you must:
- Be aged 16+
- Complete a Level 1 Track & Field course
- Have an up to date enhanced DBS check
Yate & District Athletic Club will finance the cost of the course for any club member who wishes to attain an Officials qualification.
At most competitions, Officials are provided free lunches.
