Team Avon Team Managers’ report for the 2025 season
The overall performance by Team Avon athletes was highly commendable, despite the competition being very strong this year. The weather was horrendously wet and windy throughout the day which made jumping and throwing in particular very difficult.
Even so, our athletes battled through and every point was hard won. Many athletes won medals across a range events. The outstanding performance for Team Avon was Ewan Sparey’s gold medal run in the U17 800m. His time of 1.55.6 placed him 5th among the top scoring athletes on the day for performance.
We were proud of our athletes’ amazing team spirit and a willingness to work hard for each other. They are a credit to their clubs. Our Team Avon awards can be found on display in the Yate clubhouse.
There were many outstanding performances over the YDL season and we won our SW/ Wales Premier division very comfortably to qualify for the National Final. It was disappointing that many of our top athletes did not take up their places in the National Final. Then we would have finished much higher than sixth.
For his work over the season, our thanks to Jim Strudwick for his first-rate administrative support. In addition, we are grateful to our exceptionally competent officials who have worked so diligently for us both home and away.
Finally, our appreciation must go to the athletes’ parents who (uncomplainingly) take them to the matches and cheer us on so loudly!
We look forward to the 2026 season, although there are still many issues to be ironed out at the YDL AGM. So far, it has been agreed that the YDL structure will be LAG U14 & U16, UAG U18 & U20. We have yet to agree the timetables for each section of the league and which of the new events and distances will be included. The UAG will have fewer athletes to call on as the U20s pool of athletes will be smaller having lost a year group. This is a concern for all clubs and teams as many top year U20s are away at university and travelling back to matches is problematic.
Lesley, Jim and I always attend the YDL AGM in November on behalf of Team Avon and would urge clubs to send a representative for the lower age groups to ensure the future development of our young athletes is safeguarded. The YDL is too important to lose.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Woodman and Lesley Nunn (Team Avon Team Managers)
