Club Competition Postponed.

28/03/2015/in Open Meeting /by Jeremy Dale

We are sorry to announce our Club competition due to be held tomorrow (29/03/15) has had to be postponed.

The forecast weather of high winds and heavy rain are not compatible with safe Jumping and long throws, which, together with a few other issues have lead to this decision. We intend to re arrange the complete event for Sunday 26/4/15 which still leaves enough time for the results to be available for team manager for the first YDL and Avon track and field competitions. Watch the news section for conformation of the rearranged date.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused but we hope you agree a safe, smoothly run event is paramount.

English Schools Cross Country News

15/03/2015/in Cross Country, English Schools, Westbury /by Jeremy Dale
Lesley had kept me informed during the afternoon and the headline seemed to be that Westbury and Yate athletes had had a very good day, with several finishing the first fifty – always a good measure in an event as big as English Schools.

A number of athletes suffered from the mass start, picking up spike injuries, none of which held them back at all. This included the boy who discovered that his leg was covered in blood when he finished and needed seven stitches. Unusually, there were facilities on hand for stitches to be done on site, without the need for carrying anyone off to hospital.

Lesley noted that as well as the normal first aid cover, there was a mountain rescue team on hand! And this indicated the kind of course that athletes were faced with. She herself took the sensible decision NOT to walk the course with the senior girls.

In the under-15 girls race a fascinating story unfolded as the girls came in. Ellie Hobbs finished in fourteenth place – in itself a noteworthy achievement. But then look at the results around her. The 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th finishers all clocked 11:54; the 13th girl clocked 11:55, and Ellie clocked 11:56. So a bit like the Battle of Waterloo – a damn close-run thing. The first eight in the race get picked for England; nine and ten are reserves.

So Ellie was just two seconds off an international vest. And she has another year in that age group.

Her sister, Hannah finished 25th, Ellie Leather 63rd and Rosie Allen 99th (after falling at the start). To say that Pat Gallagher was over the moon is putting it mildly.

Aidan Noble was the best Avon finisher in the boys’ races, coming home in 32nd – continuing his good form this winter.

So no trophies for Avon this year – but some really good Westbury and Yate performances.

Club Jump, Throws & Middle distance entry form on line

08/03/2015/in Open Meeting /by Jeremy Dale

Club open29:03:15:1

Entry Form

Being held on 29/03/15 at Yate, the Club Throws, jumps and Middle distance entry form is now on line. Open for school years 4&5, 6&7, 8&9, and 10&11, this event is your opportunity to register early season times, distance and heights for those who want to compete for the club (including Westbury Harriers). Team managers will use this information to select teams for the first competitions of the year. This event (together with the Sprints and Hurdles on 12/04/15) will cover most of the expected disciplines, so is also your opportunity to try a jump or throw or distance you would not normally enter. You do not have to be the best or even the top 4 or 5 as there are always some who cannot make it, so if you have competed here you may get your chance to represent the club.

For the under 11s (school years 4&5) there is the Quad Kids competition for Howler throw, 75m, 600m, and long jump. This may be your first opportunity to compete, and can be done in a friendly club environment with athletes who you may know.

It is ‘enter on the day’ at only £3 for the quad kids or 3 other events. Simply print off the entry form, which has the events and time table on it, fill in the tear off entry on the bottom, turn up pay and compete.

The club are looking for as many athletes to have a go as we have always found some surprise themselves in competitions!

Please tell as many fellow athletes as possible, we hope to make this a fun, competitive day!

Look forward to seeing you all there.

Jacob Selected for England U20 Team!

07/03/2015/in International /by Jeremy Dale

Great news that Jacob Spence has been selected for the England U20 team for the international to be held tomorrow in Cardiff. Jacob will be competing in the 60mH and it is great to see all his hard work and performances over the years being recognised with his call up to the England team. We all wish him the best of luck.

Track Restrictions Tonight 05/03/15

05/03/2015/in Training sessions /by Jeremy Dale

We have just been advised the white lining on the track is being done today and will not be dry for tonight. We therefore only have the home straight (finish line is also repainted so has to be avoided) shot putt, hammer and High jump areas available tonight.  I would suggest Sandra and Mark could share the home straight for short speed work, Graham is on Holiday so no hurdles, distance work will be unavailable, as is long/triple jump, javelin, the two bends and back straight. Check with your coach if in doubt who will make their own decision.Access to the container and club house are okay if you want to do core work.

Midland indoor open NIA Barclaycard Arena 22/02/15.

01/03/2015/in Indoor, Open Meeting /by Jeremy Dale

Our annual trip to Birmingham for the indoor open competition is more popular each year with 28 Athletes making the trip this year. For many it was their first indoor and some their first competition ever, so a huge experience. Lots of PB we achieved from new and more experienced athletes, as can be see from the results matrix below which Mark Lodge put together (thanks Mark). We were also able to appreciate a record  set by the vet 200m relay team. So all in all a entertaining fun day.

The Midland U15/U17/U20 championships took place at Sheffield this weekend, so as soon as we hear we will let you know those results too.
