Team Avon Team Managers’ report for the 2024 season
Team Avon’s 4th place can be attributed to a tremendous performance by our athletes, despite the thunderstorm halfway through the afternoon making the conditions for competing very difficult. Our relays are always very strong (second highest team points) and we had some outstanding performances in the sprints and throws (full results are attached). Once again, the competition was of a very high standard and every point was hard won. Our athletes bagged a whole range of medals across the events and they really rose to the occasion, dealing with some tough opposition. They show an incredible team spirit and a willingness to go that extra mile for each other. This attitude will stand them in good stead all their lives.
There were many excellent performances over the YDL season and we won our SW/ Wales division very comfortably to qualify for the National Final. Clubs can be very proud of their athletes who competed in the league matches and the National Final. Our Team Avon awards can be found on display in the Yate clubhouse.
Our appreciation goes once again go to Jim Strudwick for his excellent administrative support and encouragement, and also to our wonderful officials who have worked so conscientiously for us this season.
We look forward to next year when we hope to improve our final position. Many parents were surprised to hear that the Youth Development League will almost certainly come to an end after next season when the age groups change. The forthcoming YDL AGM in November will be very important in deciding what happens next (if anything, as UKA/EA are not providing any funding or support to create new national youth leagues) and how much the clubs can afford to pay to help with this. Lesley, Jim and I always attend the YDL AGM on behalf of Team Avon and would urge clubs to send a representative for the lower age groups to ensure the future development of our young athletes is safeguarded. The YDL is too important to lose.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Woodman and Lesley Nunn (Team Avon Team Managers)
