Adaptive and Para Update July 2024
from Jim Kyle
Almost too busy to find time to write the news since the Avon League on June 9th!
There continue to be regular training sessions Monday, Tuesday and Fridays at YOSC.
Stoke Mandeville was the next competition on June 15th and that involved Nancy Jubb and Toby Richardson who both recorded PBs in winning their 200m races.
The Stoke Mandeville competitions attract the paralympic athletes from all over the UK. So quite important.
Next up was a major breakthrough: the South West Schools Combined Events meeting at Yeovil include para competitors for first time ever. Small number this year but they came from Dorset, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Avon.
Our Yate para athletes did well Rory Brown won the 100m and 400m (representing Wiltshire Schools). Charlie Prewett, Oliver Summers-Downton and Luke Hellyer all competed successfully.
Special mention for Nancy Jubb’s PB in the 100m which was immediately followed by a car sprint to Wembley to see Taylor Swift at the arena. We suspect it was Taylor Swift’s PB as well.
Yate Para group competed at the AAA Wise Campus event on 25th June. There was a dead heat in the 100m with Harry Spry, Chris Callow and Toby Richardson all clocking exactly the same time.
Next was the National Junior Para Competition at Coventry on July 6 and 7th. Again, both Toby (100m, 200m and seated discus) and Nancy (100m and 400m) excelled, posting PBs. Nancy then met up with Hannah Cockcroft one of the UK Paralympians.
And then back to Stoke Mandeville for a Grand Prix event on 13th July. Same story, outstanding performances from both athletes. Nancy is now ranked number one in her age group for all distances, and number three in her classification nationally for all ages for 100m; ranked 3rd for 200m and 6th for 400m.
Toby is ranked number one in his age group for all distances, and tenth in his classification nationally for all ages for 100m; ranked 2nd for 200m and 11th for 400m and 800m. (these rankings include Paralympians).
It has been a busy and successful time. And there is more to come.
