Adaptive Athletics – March 2024 Update
In 2023, we have worked with over 100 participants from the age of 6 years to over 50 years.
We have run sessions and competitions for those with a wide range of disability – physical, intellectual, deaf and blind.
Our approach to Adaptive and Para-Athletics is to “respect the individual and adapt the activities”.
We are concerned with health and well being as much as athletic achievement.
We have a range of specialist equipment in our onsite gym; for use on the track: throws, wheelchair racing, frame running, seated throws and most equipment needed in athletics.
As well as the track we have a small indoor training area and we have been working to make all of the facilities accessible to participants, families and officials.
With new grants, we are offering track and field training sessions, profiling for development, physiotherapy and exercise plans.
Discussion with carers and families, competition through the Avon League and support for external competition.
At the heart of this is the aspiration for well-being in all participants.
We now have 4 coaches working with registered adaptive athletes, with some competing at regional and national level.
We have added a sports therapist to the team each week and are hoping to recruit specialists in nutrition and health.
There is no fee for becoming an adaptive athlete and training with us, although there are costs later in taking part in competition.
Two athletes were recognised in the Club’s annual awards and another 2 participants have taken the course to become assistant coaches.
We provide usually 5 sessions per week and this increases to 7 sessions from Easter to the Autumn.
