Charles was a naturally talented Discus thrower. The U13 Club Record he set in 1985, U17 club record he set in 1989 and U20 club record he set in 1991 were all still standing in 2018.
As well as Discus, Charles also took up the Hammer Throw, joining team mate Matt Spicer in getting coaching from the Irish ex-international thrower, Eugene Lawlor.
Charles won gold at the 1989 English Schools, held in Wigan. Competing as an Inter-Boy, a top two position provides automatic qualification to the Home Nations Schools Championships.
Representing England, Charles went to Dublin, where he finished second to the other English thrower.
