Report on the YDL Upper Age Group Match on 30th May, by Stuart Nunn.
The first competitive match for over a year took place on Sunday, when Team Avon took on North Somerset, Cheltenham, East Wales and Hereford. The result was not quite a whitewash; however, Team Avon scored 389 points, with North Somerset the runners up with 149. Yate athletes registered thirteen personal or season’s bests.
Athletes who caught the eye were Seamus Robinson in the U17 men’s 800m, who came home well ahead of the opposition in 1:58.1. His running seems to improve with every outing and here he overcame a challenge from the North Somerset runner in the last 300m and never looked like being caught.
Felicity Whiteway is a hammer thrower but, in the absence of a hammer competition for U17 women, she won the triple jump in 9.62m, and impressive achievement in her second event.
Jodie Dale had a very good day, winning the U20 women’s javelin with a fine throw of 37.71m. Rosie Hamilton-James was against a very good athlete in the U20 women’s 3000m. Rosie could only manage second place, but her time of 10:19.1 looked very promising. Fiona Barkley won the high jump with a leap of 1.63m.
Under 20 men who stood out were Isaac Cory and Max Elliott in the 100m. These two have an ongoing friendly rivalry going. Isaac won the race in 11.1 seconds with Max just 0.1 of a second behind him. Also looking good was Greg Hayward in the 800m, finishing in 1:58.1.
Adam Nolan is an athlete who has developed a lot during lockdown. 400m hurdles is not his favourite event, but he still managed a solid win in 61.72 seconds.
With the club’s top hammer throwers away at elite training, it was left to Dylan Menhennet to compete in the U17 men’s throw. His winning throw of 51.30m was too good for the opposition.
In a normal season, Team Avon would be competing against some of the best teams in the Midlands and South. This year there is little to challenge them, though North Somerset and Cheltenham had some good quality athletes. It looks as though the rest of the season will follow a similar pattern and we must look forward to better times next year.

REPORT BY TEAM MANAGER, GRAHAM HOWELL
There was a slight air of nervous anticipation on Sunday for the first National Athletic League fixture ever since the mens BAL and womens UKWAL leagues merged. Nervousness from athletes which is natural and also from those working hard to make it a successful meeting. The standards of organisation expected at this national level are a step up from what we have been used to in the past. We as a club took the opportunity while the NAL merger process was in progress at the end of 2019 to request a place in the new league. Understanding that as a club it would be hard to compete and stay at this level we took the ‘nothing ventured nothing gained’ stance knowing that for our top performers to stay with us we needed to offer them top standard competition and give our up and coming something to aspire to.
So, how did the day go? From an organisational point of view it went well, it wasn’t perfect and there are some things that will be improved next time and as we are due to host the next three fixtures all at Yate we hope more of our general membership will step up and do a little to support the club effort.
The club structure has been modified for this season to accommodate the COVID precautions and we are placed in a division with three premiership clubs and Yeovil Olympiads who with us would normally be two divisions below the premiership so we expected tough competition. I’m pleased to say that all of our athletes that took on the challenge of this first NAL fixture performed admirably with many performances at or close to their best and a number setting themselves new standards with Personal Bests.
Looking down through the results I find (if Power of 10 is correct) I’ve counted 17 Pb’s and 18 seasons bests from our athletes which bodes well for the rest of the season. The P10 results are here https://www.thepowerof10.info/results/results.aspx… and you will see there are still opportunities to get into the Yate team for the remaining fixtures. I’m going to mention all those PB’s but I thank all the team for their efforts.

A particularly pleasing set of results for me, their coach, as several landmark distances (anything that ends in a zero is treated by the throwers with excitement) were broken.

Sophie hit 30m for the first time.   Adam went 40m+ for the first time and moved him up to 5th in the UK rankings.  Matt broke the much coveted 50m in style and moved up to third in the UK rankings, just 20cm behind the second placed team mate, Dylan.  Owen slightly  improved on his previous best and remains the UK’s number two U20.

The Avon Track and Field League has always been the place for aspiring athletes to try out new events or to strive for better performances. Yate & District have always done well here, but not often as well as they did this last weekend.

The programme had been adjusted to take account of Covid restrictions and a couple of smaller clubs were missing. By the end of the afternoon it was clear that Yate had racked up over a thousand points, nearly two hundred more than Bristol & West, their nearest rivals. In field events there were few athletes to challenge their dominance, with virtual clean sweeps in pole vault, hammer and javelin.

Sam Hillier-Smith’s pole vault group can feel very proud of themselves. Potentially pick of the female bunch was Arisa Burgess, whose 2.70 metres (U15 Club Record) was only matched by Hannah Lewis, vaulting here as a senior woman, with Sophie Hornung and Amy Nolan also showing well. On the men’s side, Adam Nolan (U17) and Liam Hillier (SM) both vaulted 3.55m, while Harry Williams and Lewis Wall both acquitted themselves well.

We are used now to seeing good things from the hammer cage. With no men’s hammer events, it was left to the six Yate women to show the rest how it was done. Felicity Whiteway (U17) threw 42.26m for a fine win, but four more threw over thirty metres: Karen Jones (SW) 32.29m, Hannah Holman (U17) 31.64, Maddison Hillier-Smith (U15) 30.98m and Sophie Page (U15) 30.98. A fine display to gladden the hearts of their coaches, Matt Spicer and Paul Thorn.

Javelin throwers were led here by Jodie Dale, who has been threatening to throw over forty metres for a while. 40.11m was good enough for a Senior club record and qualification for the national age group championships. Also throwing well were Cara Wilson and Annabel Gordon, both throwing over twenty metres for valuable points.

On the track, outright winners were harder to come by. Kirsty Treglown was impressive in the senior women’s 100m, taking it in 12.4 seconds. Katie Robbins did equally well in the senior 400m with a time of 58.3. Under-15 boy Kaelen McLeary won the 100m in 12.3 secs. In the under-17 men’s category Fredrick Cooper looked good in the 1500m with 4:19.0, and Adam Nolan continued his progress in the 400m, winning comfortably in 52.4 secs.

All in all, a good Yate performance that promised a good deal for the rest of the season.

Until this season, Yate senior men and women competed in a joint team with Bristol & West in the Midland League. With both clubs now entering teams in the National League it was decided that it was unreasonable for them to continue cooperating in that way.

Consequently, Sunday 20 June was the first time they came up against each other at this level. There were gaps in the Yate team – but so there were in those of Bristol, Cheltenham and Gloucester and it was a pleasant surprise to see the final result:

This was particularly encouraging because several of Yate’s top athletes were absent at national championships – more of which presently.

Outstanding on the track was the performance of Artie Savage-Swaine in the 3000m. Still an under-17, he dominated the race from the gun and came home well over 100m from his nearest rival, a senior man from Gloucester. His time of 9:05.33 secs was the equivalent of running miles in 4.5 minutes. Equally pleasing was to see Ellie Leather home from the USA, taking charge of the 1500m and finishing well clear in 4:54.38 secs. Ellie also set off in the 3000m, giving a helping hand to Rosie Hamilton James, and dropping out to give Rosie a clear run to the finish. Completing a fine Yate showing in the middle-distance events was Seamus Robinson, who stormed to victory in the 800m in just 1:57.79 secs. All of which shows the benefit to both clubs of Yate’s partnership with Westbury Harriers.

There was a fine double first for Yate in the 400m with Ben Wells winning the A race and Adam Nolan the B, their times of 48.54 secs and 52.27 secs respectively. Just as impressive was James Edwards’ win in the 400m hurdles in 63.75 secs.

There were wins also for Hannah Lewis in the pole vault (2.70m); Kirsty Treglown in the 100m B (12.57 secs); Katie Robbins in the 400m (58.15secs); Clementine Lees in 1500m B race (5:16.26); Thomas Reed in the 3000m B race (9:35.11).

Matt Muggeridge placed second in the javelin (42.24m), backed up with a win in the B event for Adam Nolan who threw 39.83m.

Yate rounded off the afternoon with a win in the 4x100m relay in 43.44 secs.

Team manager Matt Muggeridge is to be congratulated on putting together such a successful team, that promises a great deal for the rest of the season and future competition in this league

NAL 3rd July Match report by Graham Howell;
The team suffered a little with a number of athletes having to pull out for isolation reasons and for athletes preparing for next weekends English Schools Championships.
Despite that, we had some athletes returning to the team and some new club athletes taking up some of the vacant places.
Generally all teams seemed to be struggling to fill the events but there were plenty of competitive battles of good standard taking place.
A good day for the short sprints with a slightly too favourable wind in some events, that didn’t detract from some very fine sprinting from Ben Wells, Dan Brooks, Isaac Cory and Max Elliott who combined in the 4x100m relay to set a new Senior club record of 42.29s. Kirsty Treglown, Hannah Jackson with newcomers to Yate AC Stephanie Brooks and Sophie Greenslade also combed well in the womens 4x100m relay for a good 2nd place.
For the middle distance contingent Greg Hayward set a Pb of 1m57.64 in the 800m claiming a brilliant victory in a competitive race. Anthony Glover set a new Masters 45 club record in the 1500m with a 4m15.84s and Rhiannon Paton in the womens 1500m lowered her personal best by more than 5 seconds to go under 5 minutes for the first time with 4m59.55s.
Another Pb for Reece Straker who took 1st place in the mens Hammer with 45.33 metres and coach Matt Spicer set a new Master 50 club record of 33.99m. Leah Hale also pushed her Pb in the hammer up to 40.80m and not to be outdone in the Pb achievements Maisy Harvey also improved with a 36.85m. Continuing with throws Pb’s James Viner established new marks in Discus (28.57m ) and Shot (8.87m).
The raising of standards didn’t just happen for the athletes there were also notable standards being applied with the levels of officiating taking place. These matches area a great place for new officials to gain valuable experience and learn from the expertise present. It will be vital next year to have more of our own club volunteers getting qualified and now is the time to start. It goes without saying the athletes really appreciate our officiating personnel who give them their opportunities to perform.
With the next match again at Yate on 7th August I’m hoping we can again rise to the occasion on all fronts.

YDL UAG Team Managers’ report Match 3 on 25th July at Yate 

Team Avon (Bath, Bristol, Mendip and Yate U17 and U20 athletes) are in a commanding position at the top of the Midland South West division (east area) which includes Cheltenham Harriers, East Wales, Hereford and District Harriers, and North Somerset. 

We have won every match to date by a large margin, including Match 3 which we won by over 300 points from the next club (usually East Wales). Yate athletes made an outstanding contribution again to this success and there were several personal best and season’s best performances.

National Athletics League Match 3, 7th August, Yate
An afternoon of gusty wind and frequent squally showers was not the best of weather conditions for athlete performances.
There may not have been a depth of good athletes but there are certainly some high standard performances being produced in some events and is ideal for Yate athletes to experience quality opposition and maybe raise their game.
Yate performers did provide a few Personal bests and some seasons bests on the day. It was also good to see some returning from injury and getting their shortened season underway.
Some impressive running in 400 Hurdles and 400m from Amy Pye saw her nudge her Pb’s to 60.29s and 57.62s respectively.
James Viner held the men’s throws effort together and was rewarded with a big improvement to 48.78m in Hammer, while for the Women, Maisy Harvey again improved her Hammer Pb to 38.24m.
Stephanie Brooks got some more Heptathlon events practice, her 200m proving to be her most productive with a new 26.03s Pb.
Soaring to new heights in Pole Vault was Hannah Lewis who was pleased to finally move her Pb on to 2.82m.
Seasons bests came from Chris Hill (11.29/100m), Daniel Brooks (10.71/100m), Ethan Steel (11.21/100m), Robyn Ellison (5.27/ Long jump) and Tracey Watson (19.66m/Discus).

RESULTS:  Premiership West – Yate – 28/8/21 – National Athletics League

MATCH REPORT:

The final match in this debut season at a National League level for Yate & District AC lacked a little lustre in competitive terms. Athlete numbers were very low with only Yate and Bristol & West AC putting out reasonable teams. Yate athletes that took the opportunity of competition had a decent afternoon of weather to compete in although the slight breeze didn’t favour the sprinters this time.
Again we had athletes still improving their performances at the back end of the season and some making their debuts for the NAL team which will hopefully give them some enthusiasm for next season when we should be returning to a normal league season with possible promotion/relegation issues to face.
Making their debuts in the NAL team were Seamus Robinson who continues his excellent season placing third in the 800m, Alan Uren with a Pb in the 1500m (4m22.05s), Tilly Spinney with a Pb in the 1500m (5m01.45s), Oli Beale with a Pb in the 5000m (15m46.87s) and it was great to have Floren Scrafton back enjoying two solid performances in 1500m (4m53.41s) and 3000m (10m14.02s)

The match result on the day left us in 2nd place behind Bristol & West although maybe we shouldn’t read too much into that, the teams performance this season has been promising and it looks as though we compare well with the other National One clubs with whom we will contest the National One division next year.
We are coming to expect matches hosted by Yate at YOSC to be well run and Saturday was no exception, thanks to our highly efficient and professional team of Officials and support staff who have given our athletes the best of opportunities to perform throughout the season. A mention also to the support received from Bristol & West officials who stood out from the other clubs in assisting the hosting of these NAL matches.
