Daniel Williams 1987 – 1994
- Receiving an award from Lynn Davis on the track opening day
- Danny Williams
A very useful all rounder, who competed well at club level.
Danny started in Track and Field athletics in the autumn of 1986 after being inspired by seeing Daley Thompson on TV in an athletics championships of that year. He had also been intrigued by hearing of Kate Nunn’s success (they were classmates) and wanted to see what it was all about.
He started off training under Jock Storkey for crosss-country running, then eventually moved on to the tutelage of Glory Wassell in the sprints group.
Never one to specialise, the multi-events always beckoned and so he would split his time training for all the field events and the track events up to 800m. The throws became his strongest area.
After training in Hammer Throwing under Eugene Lawlor he was lucky enough to be selected for the 1988 English Schools, but unfortunately crashed out with three no-throws.
The following years were filled with 5 days a week training as an all-rounder and he loved the fact that he could fill-in very effectively in all the field events. An enduring memory is of competing in the Midland League somewhere close to Nottingham where he covered 11 events in one day. Must have covered a few miles running back and forth between events!
He finished this first foray with athletics in 1993 after concentrating for 2 years on 400H and Shot Put. An unusual combination.
Many years later in 2014 he rejoined the club when his son became interested in the sport. Competing as an M35 Masters Athlete, Danny threw Shot, Discus, Hammer and Javelin. Then after a year of serious illness, he returned again in 2016, this time as an M40 athlete and competitively threw the Shot, Discus and Hammer.
With a strong commitment to Martial Arts these days, he no longer has the same desire for Track and Field, but the club, the sport and the peacefulness of the setting of the Yate track will forever hold a special place in his heart.
