TEAM MANAGERS REPORT
With just 23 athletes, and 56% of scoring slots filled, those who made the trip to Tamworth yesterday all performed brilliantly in better than expected weather conditions to secure second place on the day.
Interesting to see that the 2 clubs, Cheltenham and ourselves, who were promoted to Div 2 this season, coming out on top, with Cheltenham certainly playing the numbers game and the only club who put out a close to full team on the day.
Several athletes secured bonus points through their performances; Luke Ball, Jodie Dale and Toby Conibear, and we finished the day with some amazing 4x100m relay runs – essentially head to heads between us and Birchfield, coming out on top in the Women’s, and narrowly missing out in the Men’s, in the closest of finishes.
To top it off, it looks like it was a SW 4x100m club record, taking a mark that has stood for 23 years !!
A fantastic day – thanks to everyone who came to support the team – and looking forward to filling more of the slots for the other matches later in the summer, so we can put in an even more competitive performance.
Thanks
Matt

LYDL Team Manager’s Report – Match 1

Competing against Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Swindon, and Cheltenham, our somewhat depleted team of U13 and U15 athletes, managed to hold on to 5th place in the Midland Premier South-West LYDL match on Sunday 7th May in Carmarthen.

For most of the day it was sunny and warm with a good atmosphere amongst our athletes, parents and officials, so despite being small in number everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

There were 31 Personal Bests recorded over the team throughout the competition.

A very big well done to everyone who took part.

We will need a full team to put us in a position to stay in this league next year. So, let’s get ready for Swindon on 3rd June.

1st-3rd places went to:

  • Augustin Downing (U15B) 1st 300m B, 2nd 800m A,
  • Darcy Simpson (U13G) 1st 800m B
  • Ciaran Merrett (U15B) 1st Hammer A, Discus A, and 3rd in Shot A
  • Owen Boon, (U15B), 1st Javelin A, 3rd 300m A, 2nd 4x300m Relay

20 MAY - Midland Athletics T&F League (Match 2) - Yate

Congratulations to everyone who turned out to compete in Match 2, our home match, at the weekend.
Conditions were good (apart from an annoying head wind for the sprinters !) and we ended up victorious on the day.
Some great performances, including lots of PBs, some bonus point performances, a divisional record from Adam Brooks, and an overall league record from our ‘A’ 4 x 400m mixed relay squad.
Thanks also to all the officials & helpers who enabled the meeting to be held – A large amount of gaps within the visiting clubs meant that the lovely Yate AC team had to step in to fill lots of extra roles.
This now means after 2 matches we are tied with Cheltenham at the top of the league standings.
Thanks

LYDL Team Manager’s Report – Swindon 3 June

  • 1st – Cheltenham & County Harriers
  • 2nd Cardiff AC
  • 3rd Swindon Harriers
  • 4th Yate & District AC
  • 5th Swansea AC
  • 6th Newport Harriers

A massive well-done to everyone that competed and supported this match at Swindon. Overall, we finished in 4th place on the day, which was up from our previous effort of 5th in Carmarthen, but overall, we are still lying in 5th place after the two matches. However, we must remember that this is our first year in the SW Premier League, so we can be very proud of our achievement so far.

Although the day was warm and sunny, there were some interesting wind conditions that made some of the technical events a challenge. Highlights for me, watching Regan Jack Williams beat the Cardiff runner and win the 100m in a new PB time, and newcomer to the track Elizabeth Hutchings (Westbury), winning the U13G 1200m in a new PB time, and showing some very mature racing tactics for such a young athlete. Nice double win for Ciaran Merrett in hammer and Discus. Also, wins in the A and B U13G’s High Jump for Tszyu Chang and Navya Wilkins. The U15G’s 4 x 300m relay win was probably the climax to the match. That club record is going down soon!

However, there were just far too many excellent performances on the day, for me to go into detail, but here are the athletes who won their event and gained maximum points for the club:

U13G Elizabeth Hutchings 1200m (A) 4.06.58 PB

U13G Tszyu Chang HJ (A) 1.30

Navya Wilkins HJ (B) 1.25 PB

U13B Harry Scherer-Cowell 75mH (A) 13.38 PB

U15G Celeste Redmond 75mH (A) 12.49 PB

Annabel Gordon Jav (A) 31.06

Lilia Killourhey 300m (B) 45.55 PB

4 x 300m Relay 3.04.92

U15B Regan-Jack Williams 100m (A) 11.95 PB

Ciaran Merrett DT (A) 31.96 and HT (A) 30.52

Ryan Walsh Jav (B) 21.13

Over 20 athletes finished in the top 3 in an event, and overall, there were 31 Personal Best performances. Please see the full results on Powerof10 website to appreciate all the fine performances our athletes put in, with some competing for the first time. Some of you, although you may not have finished first, covered several events and won lots of valuable points for the club, as well as achieving Personal Best performances or EA PB Gradings. So, a BIG thank you to everyone including our supporters club!

ALI GORDON (U13/U15 TEAM MANAGER) REPORT:
Amazing results for Yate from round 2 of the Avon Track & Field held on Sunday.
Across the U13 & U15 age groups 34 athletes competed resulting in 30 PBs and a further 21 PBs from athletes who were competing in an event for the first time (these included some new club members and athletes filling gaps to gain points for the team). Overall a grand total of 51 PBs.
Every single sprinter in both age categories for 75m, 100m and 200m achieved a PB improving on their last result or a PB because it was their first time competing in that event.
Also Owen Boon beat his own club record in U15 Javelin throwing 53.01m and Joseph Sutherland has equalled the U13 boys 75m Club Record sprinting 10.50secs as a first year U13. The record has been held since 2012.
It was a really great atmosphere full of encouraging Yate Supporters shouting and cheering on the athletes and also athletes giving plenty of encouragement to each other. There was great team spirit.

Some fantastic result from Jerry Musselwhite, who made a dramatic return following a month’s recovery from injury to take overall 🥈 Silver and break 3 individual event World records in athletics toughest all-round challenge – the Double Decathlon (DD) at the World Champs in Belgium on 8/9 July!
20 events in 2 days (both starting at 8am) in temperatures reaching 33C.
Day 1 comprised – 100m, Long Jump, 200m Hurdles, Shot Put, 5000m, 800m, High Jump, 400m, Hammer Throw, 3000m Steeplechase.
Day 2 – 110m Hurdles, Pole Vault, 200m, Discus, 3000m, 400m Hurdles, Javelin, 1500m, Triple Jump and to finish 10000m.
The GB team proudly wore club vests on Day 1, and the GB vest on Day 2.
Jerry enjoyed a see-saw battle for M65 Gold with multi world champion Juha Helander from Finland that was only settled at the end of the final event, the 10000m, in favour of Juha. Fittingly they ran the home straight together flying the Union Jack and Finnish flags.
World records for 3 of the 20 M65 individual events within a DD were broken – all by Jerry – in the 1500m, 3000m and 3000m Steeplechase.

Thanks to an amazing effort from everyone pitching in and filling in as many slots as possible we managed to come 2nd on the day in what was quite a close tussle between all the clubs. Shout out to Debbie Brooks for filling in the 400m and also running a leg of the 4x400m!
We also saw a new 4 x 100m U23 club record of 49.20 run by Natasha, Izzy, Jasmine and Kirsty. 🔥

12-16 JUL - European U23 Championships - Espoo, FIN

Huge congratulations to Isaac Cory, who was selected to represent Team GB in the 4x400m relay.

Isaac ran a strong third leg in the qualifying round, which saw the team qualify for the final and ultimately win a Bronze medal.

We think the last time a club member has medalled at a major international championships would have been 2006, when Ryan Scott  won a Bronze medal as a 4x100m team member at an U23 World Championships.

TEAM MANAGERS REPORT
After the close tussle with Reading AC at match 1 where we came out on top, match 2 became a close tussle between ourselves Milton Keynes and Wigan AC.
Unfortunately, this time we lost out to the other two clubs, we just didn’t have enough bodies to fill enough events.
Weather conditions were challenging, a strong headwind affected performances in the sprints and some field events and the occasional heavy downpour just added to the difficulties.
We had many performances taking first places, Emily Kovac in the High Jump and ‘B’ Triple Jump, Katie Robbins in ‘B’ 200m, Joanna Smerdon ‘B’ Shot put, Womens 4x100m relay, Daniel Brooks 100m, Ethan Steele ‘B’ 100m, Luke Lorenzi 200m, Ben Wells 400m, Kane Lee 800m, Alexander Wilson 3kS/C, Toby Conibear Hammer, James Viner ‘B’ Hammer, Mens 4x100m relay.
It was good to see Ethan Steele back in the team and Luke Lorenzi showing he can be an essential component to the team. Kane Lee shrugged off niggling Achilles problems to add good points in 800/1500 and our only other middle distance athlete to turn out on the day Alexander Wilson backed up with 2nd place in 800 and then led from gun to tape in the 3kS/C.
Toby Conibear and James Viner held the heavy throws events together while multi-eventer Adam Davenport spread his talents effectively in hurdles, throws and sprints.
Stephanie Brooks continues her return from injury with solid and safe exertions in throws and sprints.
Now the inspiration from the committed team athletes that are going the extra mile for the team, Kirsty Treglown, dedicated 100/200m sprinter, not Long jumped since 2019 takes 2nd place in Long jump and then pops over the 100m hurdles for the first time ever to take a few more points. The world hailed the Belgian Shot putter belgian shot putter hurdles – Google Search for her team ethic a while ago, Kirsty deserves no less. Emily Kovac’s Power of 10 performance record since she started competing used to read ‘HJ,HJ,HJ,HJ,HJ…………..HJ,HJ,HJ’, now there will be a TJ in there as Emily filled an empty Triple Jump space winning the ‘B’ string event and then led off the 4x100m relay team enabling us to have another win. Dan Brooks has been making his mark as a class 100m sprinter for some time and he’s been making his mark for the team again this season so imagine the surprise when he stepped up to fill an empty Triple jumps space, top man.
There were plenty of other supporting performances just as important to the team and we thank everyone for the part they played, no less our very proffesional team of Officials Charlotte and Matt Viner, Jason Wyatt, Jerry Musselwhite, Mike and John Smerdon who will score 45 points for the team. We should still be in first place in National One equal on League Points with Milton Keynes.
Milton Keynes have the advantage of hosting the last match and will think they are favourites to take the divisional title but I’m sure this team isn’t done yet. So for anyone that hasn’t stepped up for the club that gives you the best training venue in the area, cheap membership, cheap training, free expert coaching and competition opportunities, you need to start some performance pay back.
Next match August 5th Milton Keynes.

32 Lifetime best (pbs) and 63 graded performances (1-9) from the following:

This outstanding performance on the day from our young athletes, officials, and coaches, demonstrates how well we can do as a club when we work together as a team.

The future is bright.

HIGH JUMP

Two days earlier, Luke Ball qualified top of Pool A with 2.11m and some perfect jumping, clearing 1.98m, 2.03m, 2.07m and 2.11m on the first attempt.

On the day of the final, Luke again cleared the first three heights (2.00m, 2.05m and 2.09m) at the first attempt.  He then made everyone sweat a little, but managed to clear 2.12m on his third attempt.

With the bar then moving up to 2.15m, Luke would have needed to jump a new PB (previous best 2.14m).

He gave it everything, but unfortunately, it wasn’t quite meant to be.  But that shouldn’t take anything away from what an extraordinary achievement this is.  Eighth place at a European Championships.  Wow!

19 AUG - Midland League - Birmingham

“Results are all finally now confirmed, and after all the adjustments that had to be made, it looks like we ended up victorious on the day by the narrowest of margins – every point really did count!
This is a fantastic achievement, and in our first year back up in Division 2, we have won the league title, and will be promoted straight up again into to Division 1 next season.
I was thankful to be able to attend this match. It was great to have the opportunity to be in such a fantastic stadium in what turned into a very pleasant afternoon:
· It was great to see a few new faces in the team for this match, and hopefully we will see you again next year
· Thanks to everyone who agreed to take on events beyond their specialities – really helped to maximise our points score
· Kudos to all the short sprinters who agreed to take on a leg in the 4 x 400m relay – It was fantastic to get all our relay teams out in the final match
· As always thanks to all the officials who supported the match, especially our amazing start team who agreed to step in for the match – without them it would not have gone ahead
There were some great athletic performances across the board but a few highlights:
· Isaac and Katie setting huge new PB’s in the 400m, both also new club records
· A scintillating 100m run from Dan, breaking 10.6 for the second time this season and breaking the Divisional record in the process
· Adam jumping 2.14m and attempting a new pb/club record/div record of 2.18m in the High Jump
· A new 4 x 400m relay record from the women, beating a record that has stood for 18 years
Full results will hopefully be on Pof10 later this week, and I’ll send the results file to those who attended by email for reference.
Thanks to everyone who has supported the team through the year. See you next year in Division 1!”
