Background

Back in 2017 I never dreamt I would run again but my partner Chrissy started parkrun at Bath and encouraged me to start and I loved it. I was coming up to 60 in July 2018 and I wanted to see what I could do in different sports nationally against people in my own age group. Bizarrely Chrissy and I met an athletics multi-events legend, Tony Bowman M85 decathlete, and his wife during a dancing competition on a Strictly Come Dancing Cruise and two other seasoned decathletes, Julian Kennedy when we competed at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships and Ray McAvoy at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships. They inspired me to see what I could do on a track. Apart from 5000m I had no idea what I could do in any other events and had only competed in athletics on grass tracks as a schoolboy, when I was actually reasonably quick over the shorter distances.

I needed to join a club. I met Jeremy Dale and Graham Howell and they said they could teach me to do any event. That same night I was being coached by Ann Dale in javelin and discus in my quest to do a pentathlon. Amazing.

I developed a habit of entering track and field events before I had even tried an event. Most notably my first competition which was a virtual decathlon in July 2020. I had no idea how to do the pole vault or how to do a Fosbury flop in the high jump. Sam Hillier-Smith had me clearing 2 metres within an hour which was largely down to putting complete trust in her amazing coaching rather than any ability on my part. Likewise with Jeremy in the high jump I was doing a Fosbury flop in no time at all, although not very elegantly or high! These coaches could indeed teach an old boy new tricks.

I could never truly find out where, if anywhere, my strengths lied until I had tried as many events as possible and so I jumped at the opportunity to compete in the World Indoor Tetradecathlon Championships in France, with 3 months to train for it.

What is a Tetradecathlon?

There are 14 events held across 2 gruelling days which test bodies to the limit and beyond. It would inevitably cause athletes to drop out and others to continue despite carrying injuries.

The timetable for my group of 22 athletes would be as follows:

Saturday 26th March Sunday 27th March

0900 60m 0900 60m Hurdles

0950 Long Jump 0950 Pole Vault

1050 800m 1100 1500m

1210 Shot Put 1210 Weight Throw

1320 400m 1350 200m

1430 High Jump 1450 Triple Jump

1640 3000m 1550 5000m

Pre-event Training

This comprised

· Bespoke Strength and Conditioning

· Regular physio check-up and maintenance sessions

· parkruns, South West Inter County Cross-Country Championships (Silver in M60), South West Vets Cross-Country Championships (Gold in M60), representing Westbury Harriers, and mixed terrain training

· Club training sessions, though these were severely hampered by the British Weather

· Replicating as far as possible at Yate the day 1 and day 2 events, typically on a Monday and Tuesday first thing in the morning (with the exception of pole vault and high jump)

· First and only experience of running on an indoor track at Lee Valley in 800m and 1500m races in January. The expected gap was 1 hour 30 minutes between races but in reality it was 15 minutes. After I plucked up courage to run the second race It turned out to be an excellent confidence booster as I ran faster in the 1500m than in the whole of the previous year and even put in a sprint finish!

The Competition at the Miramas Metropole Stadium

The Miramas Stadium is near Marseille and is world class with 7,500 seats, a 200m main competition track and 300m warm up track underneath the stands.

The opening ceremony set a terrific atmosphere in the stadium that would last throughout the 2 days. The ever-present professional commentary and razzamatazz covering all the events and post event interviews added to the excitement and generated a high level of crowd involvement, especially from the French. All highly conducive to top class performances across two energy sapping days. (The French have taken to Ultra Athletics in a big way and even have specialist coaches).

The Championships had a capacity limit of some 110 competitors due to some 150 track heats and field pools to be completed across the two days. The competitors were split into 4 groups, with ages ranging from U18 to 75+. I was in Group A, comprising men aged 55 up and 5 ladies of differing age groups.

GB had 3 athletes in the M60s with the highly experienced multi-eventers Andrew Waddington and John William Dickinson joining me, a Tetradecathlon novice and first timer. (Carl McMullen competing in M40 was the other GB representative, with an excellent track record in Ultra events). Andrew and John William had just moved into the 60’s age group as had the leading Frenchman accompanied by two other French regular multi-eventers. Andrew is a colossus of multi-events, with multiple world records overall and in the individual events, at different age groups when he chooses

to compete. So, it was always going to be extremely tough. My plan was to attack hard in the last event of each day which were the 3000m on the Saturday and 5000m on the Sunday. Sandwiched in between would my other targeted event, the 1500m, after the 60m hurdles and pole vault on the second morning.

If I was going to be successful it would be based on my winter training and competitions plus the relentless event simulation training at Yate. The awful British weather was a big advantage for me as it forced me to complete the majority of the events in order over two successive days in less than 2 hours each day and still road test my nutritionist’s competition plan. Importantly I was regularly surpassing my target times for my key events, even when temperatures were hovering around zero centigrade, the track was covered with frost, the rain was pouring or during the gales. Surely running on an indoor track in the south of France would be a delight?

What happened?

I’d not been able to train flat out for sprints due to the weather and knew I needed to be cautious to get to the end of the competition.

Day 1

Event 1. First ever 60m run was below 10 seconds and a fair start, followed by 2. Long jump close to a PB despite taking off on the wrong leg! 3. The 800m saw Andrew Waddington go off at a tremendous pace to break the individual age group world record for this event within a Tetradecathlon. I was happy to acclimatise myself and work my way through the field to finish comfortably in third in a competitive time behind the leading and remarkably athletic, super-hero looking Frenchman Michel Serre.

4. The Shot put was below my best and 5. The 400m as well. Jeremy Dale will be a little disappointed I didn’t quite execute 6. The high jump as planned. Dirk a very helpful Dutchman observed “Jerry, it is about transferring your speed upwards, not how long you can fly along the bar!”.

Then the last event of the first day arrived 7. The 3000m. Michel Serre, the USA senior woman Amanda Pasko, and two Male 55 group Belgians, Herman and Patrick, who were very fast over an earlier 800m heat, were in front of me for the first couple of laps of 15, but I was feeling strong holdimg a metronomic pace and soon hit the front. Each of the three kilometre splits were all within 0.4 of a second and I smashed the M60 world record within a Tetradecathlon by 23 seconds. An interview with the commentator followed. Once all the 3000m races across all age groups were completed I was surprised to learn my performance earned me the 3000m best performance trophy for the most points scored (taking into account time and age) of all the 100+ competitors at the championships. That led to a video interview that I guess may be part of the results pack on the website in due course. Heady stuff! To ensure I kept this record I would have to finish every event on day 2 otherwise all events done would be erased and count for nothing!

Footnote – 30,000 steps on the day and 40 floors climbed (going up and down the stands to where the GB contingent and support were)

Day 2

Lost an hour to the clocks changing but soon loosened up for the 8. The 60m hurdles. My approach was high and safe in a time behind my training runs at Yate, but I was happy enough.

The pole vault with our group of 22 split into two pits was the only real organisational glitch. There was mayhem in finding the pole I had requested, begging some tape for hand grips and measuring my run up against vaulters anxious to get in a couple of practice attempts. Our group were the lower height vaulters and I found myself with a dilemma. I was left in with a Belgian M55 as the start of the 1500m drew ever closer. I made the correct decision and left the competition with attempts remaining.

With a quick warm up and somewhat agitated from the pole vault experience I started off at a good pace in front of the leading M60 Frenchman, Michel Serre. He was quicker than me in the 800m and sprints but would this be where I came into my own? I knew from the vocal French support he was close behind. From 500m I gradually kept increasing the pace until the very end with Michel about 10m behind to break the world record M60 1500m in a Tetradecathlon by 15 seconds.

A nice best ever throw in the Weight Throw was followed by a cautious 200m and triple jump almost a metre ahead of last season.

Now to the last race, the 5000m. Andrew Waddington and John William Dickinson were in the first heat and did the best they could having given their all across the two days. Andrew had clearly won gold overall and also broke the overall world record and Michel would get silver what ever happened in my race which he was in. For John William who had been in bronze medal position seemingly throughout it would be a nervous wait to see what I would do. I had not been studying my points total but just focusing on my key events.

A delay to fit in some 200m heats for senior men running behind schedule put our start back. I was hoping my legs would be ok for this last and crucial event. Bercy Niang of the France M60 team had completed his run and kindly sought me out. “Jerry. You are a warrior. You can get your third record!”

Each runner was then called into the arena to mark the last and 14th event to a great atmosphere and a mini guard of honour of Union Jacks from our supporters. After the gun went I was immediately cut across by the German record holder for M60 5000m who set the record back in 2011, requiring some nifty footwork from me to avoid a fall. I soon passed him but found myself behind the American senior woman, Michel Serre and the two Belgians who as usual were sticking together like they were on a tandem. I soon found myself behind the Belgians and after two laps they had slowed significantly and perhaps deliberately. Spurred on by the GB contingent just past the finish line I changed gears and hit the front to run the race at my pace and enjoy each of the remaining laps of the 25 lap race. As always Chrissy was my ace in the crowd shouting suitable encouragement every lap, apart from one I noticed when evidently she was distracted!

It was a great atmosphere as I approached the finish and to hear Bercy, a French rival cheering me on was very special as I broke the German’s record by 31 seconds lapping everyone in the field at least once.

Cruelly for John William Dickinson I pipped him by a few points to take the bronze medal overall, but he has time on his side and he is now looking forward to me going into the next age group in 2023!

We won it!

Yes, we won it, beating Bristol & West AC by four points! Amazing team effort win that we finally clinched, when five out of six of our relay teams, in the last hour of the match, came in first ahead of Bristol & West AC.

There were brave performances by our new U13 athletes just up from Quad Kids, who overcame their nerves and lack of experience to achieve new personal bests and AAA graded performances in their events. Likewise, there were excellent graded performances from older and more experienced athletes who generated positivity across the team. I am immensely proud of all of you. Well done!

The following athletes achieved AAA Graded performances 1-4, with 1 being the highest:

(1) Estelle Lowe (800m) U15G

(2) Isabelle Walkey (100/200m) U15G

Ciaran Merrett (Shot/Javelin) U13B

Matilda Green (High Jump) U13G

Hosting a Double Header match with eleven teams is not easy. So, a big THANK YOU goes to all the Yate match officials, recorders, helpers, and parents, who supported the athletes on the day, and who behind the scenes, on and off the track, worked around the clock to make sure everything ran smoothly. All visiting Team Managers also send thanks to the club for hosting an enjoyable match, which made them feel we were operating in ‘normal’ mode again.

Next stop and challenge will be Hereford on Saturday 21 May.

The Future is Bright….

A brilliant overall team performance gave us a win in our second match at Hereford last Saturday. We won by over 40 points, beating Bristol & West, Gloucester, North Somerset, and Team Bath clubs, and it stayed dry all day!! A big thank you to all athletes, parents, and officials again, for your efforts and help. I cannot mention everyone in this report because there were so many fantastic results from you all, with many athletes competing in the maximum number of events allowed for us to gain maximum team points on the day.

It was a disappointingly small, but perfectly formed team who competed in a dreary Wolverhampton today.
Amazing performances and dedication from those 18 athletes who turned out and we managed to finish mid table. Not too far off the top .. oh what might have been if the HJ hadn’t have been cancelled and we had managed to get the relay teams out !
Congratulations again to Toby Conibear and Jodie Dale who again achieved bonus points with their performances, and Fred Cooper was only a couple of seconds away from bonus points in his first every 3k s/c.
We really need the track athletes to turn out in force for the remaining 2 matches.
Thanks again
Matt Muggeridge, Team Manager
After the adjustments have been made to account for the cancelling of the Ladies High Jump, we have been elevated to 3rd position on the day.
Thanks to Stephanie Brooks and Emily Kovac – even though you didn’t have to jump you managed to get the points
This leaves us in joint first place overall in the league with 2 other clubs at the halfway point in the season.

Thanks to all the athletes, officials and helpers who contributed to the match today. It was an excellent, well run event on a warm and breezy day and we managed to take advantage of being at home to win the match quite comfortably. These are the provisional scores. This means we are sitting at the top of the league with 1 match to go in 4 weeks.
Special note to Jodie Dale, James Viner, Reece Straker and Adam Brooks, who’s performances were at a standard to earn bonus points.
Adam’s height was also a Midland League Divisional record.
It was great to see lots of relay teams out, and the Men’s 4 * 400 team seem to have run a Midland League record (tbc) which would be a fantastic achievement.
An amazing day of athletics – thanks all

LYDL Promotion Match Report

An incredible effort that produced twenty-four personal bests and twenty-two graded standard performances, put the U13s/15s team in second place to Swansea Harriers on the day and gained us promotion to the Midland Southwest Premier League Division for next year. A truly remarkable team effort both from the team on the day and all the other athletes who have contributed over the previous three matches to win our league. Other teams competing for promotion were Newport, Bristol & West/Mendip AC, Cardiff Archers, Neath, and South Wales.

There were wonderful performances, too many to list, but here are some:

U13Bs

Tristan Wilkins won the javelin throwing a 31.74m pb and achieving a Grade 1 standard.

Raad Ardalan and Harry Scherer-Cowell both ran pbs in the 75m/150m with Grade 4 standards.

Fin Macleod won the 75m hurdles in a pb and Grade 2 time and achieved a Grade 4 standard in the high jump.

Edwin Iwhiwhu achieved a pb in the 800m, taking over 3 seconds off his previous time.

U13Gs

Lily Walkey, Summer Richards, Tensie Littlewood all achieved Grade 4 standards in the sprints. Lauren Yapp ran a pb in the 150m and gained a Grade 4 standard in the javelin. Brooke Michael ran a pb in the 800m.

U15Bs

In the sprints, Zac Wiggington and Jack Ramsey both ran pbs in the 200m with Wiggington achieving a Grade 4 standard, and Excel Iwhiwhu ran a pb in the 100m.

In the middle-distance events, Augustin Downing ran Grade 4 standards in both the 300m and 800m events, and Tom Howard ran a pb in the 1500m.

In the throws, Henry Watson threw a Grade 3 standard in the javelin and James Cunningham threw a new pb in the discus.

U15Gs

In the high jump, Evie Moir achieved a Grade 1 standard winning the event in 1.63m. Celeste Redmond in the same event achieved a new personal best as well as achieving a pb and Grade 3 standard in the 75m hurdles, where Lilia Finch also achieved a Grade 4 standard.

Jasmine Richards ran a pb in the 100m with a Grade 3 performance, as well as throwing a pb in the shot, and Ash Hillier-Smith achieved a Grade 3 standard, finishing second in the hammer event. Annabel Gordan’s throw in the javelin of 26.61m gave her a Grade 4 standard.

There were pbs from Cara Wilson in the javelin, Izzy Hill in the 200m, Evie Timbrell and Megan Troughton in the 1500m.

Once again, a huge well done to everyone and a big thank you to those who take on extra events or step-in at the last minute to support the team. Your enthusiasm and determination will make you make you more resilient athletes.

Also, a massive thank you to all the parents, coaches and officials who have given time and energy supporting these wonderful young people. Enjoy the rest of the season and best wishes to those who have competitions left to do.

Owen Merrett finished in 15th place in a huge field of 23 of the best U20 hammer throwers in the world!
Owen threw 70.50m, which was a fantastic PB and his first throw over 70m, with the 6kg implement.  His best distance was only 85cm short for a place in the final.
This throw puts Owen 6m clear at the top of this season’s UK rankings, places him 12th on the UK ‘all time’ list, and 22nd in the U20 WORLD rankings for 2022.
Well done Owen (and coach Matt Spicer) – you did us proud!

T&F League Results 2022 – Midland Counties Athletics (midland-athletics.co.uk) – DIVISION 3 / MATCH 4

Provisional results for Match 4 are in, and it looks like we were victorious on the day and as such have won the league overall.
Fantastic achievement and thanks to all the athletes who made the trip on a very warm day but special thanks to all our wonderful officials. The officials points have made all the difference to the final score and without them the match wouldn’t have even been able to go ahead as we had to pick up lots of the slack from the other teams.

Adam Merrett won bronze in the U17 hammer with a new PB.
Henry Watson won bronze in the U15 javelin.
Natasha Moyes also competed in both the 100m and 75mH, finishing fourth in both heats.
Well done everyone – great results in difficult conditions, against the best in the region!

20 AUG - National Athletics League (4) - Yate

A brilliant effort from the team today, provisional results have us in 2nd place just 2 points behind Yeovil who came first. That means Yeovil take the Division title with Belgrave in 2nd Portsmouth in 3rd and Yate in 4th on equal League points with Portsmouth but fewer accumulated match points across the 4 fixtures.

The final match of the National Athletics league was on 20th August on home soil at YOSC. There were some fantastic performances and a great team effort, as you can read about in the following match report by Graham Howell. We came second on the match, only 2 points behind Yeovil Olympiads, and finished in 4th place overall in the final National One Division table, meaning we stay in this division for next season.
National Athletic League Match 4 Report, YOSC, 20th August 2022 by Team Manager Graham Howell
There was hope that the final match being a home fixture would bring out more athletes and there were certainly less unfilled spots in the team although it was still far from perfect. With Belgrave Harriers and Yeovil Olympiads contesting to be National One Division champions and City of Portsmouth endeavouring to stay in third place it wasn’t surprising to find that the contenders had brought pretty strong teams to do battle.
Our points scoring after a slow start built momentum through the match and as results were loaded into the OpenTrack system the match positions for the clubs changed a number of times with Belgrave, Portsmouth, Yeovil and Yate all very close.
Katie Robbins smashed her 400m best by almost a second. Commenting that her legs felt dead in the last stages of the race (that’s 400m running Katie!) she was surprised and delighted with her performance.
The 100m,200m sprinters had ideal conditions, warmth and a favourable wind just under the 2m/s legal limit. Stephanie Brookes claimed a 100m PB taking a quarter of a second off her previous mark. The ever reliable Ethan Steele and Kirsty Treglown posted times close to their seasons best, while Theo Reeve and Luke Lorenzi debuting for the team posted seasons bests. If you challenge yourself against higher levels of competition it can draw out the best in you.
Toby Conibear, another team stalwart, reaped more reward with 3 PB’s, again not only in his favoured Hammer but also in Shot and Discus. In the Javelin Jodie Dale secured her fourth win of the NAL campaign while Joanne Smerdon closed in on the 30 metre mark again with a seasons best. Leah Hale was back to her best in the Hammer with a throw over 40 metres and a PB in the Shot. In an end of season diversion Owen Merrett threw over 50 metres in the Javelin.
Harry Williams continued his progress in Pole Vault with a new PB. There was a welcome return to competition from David Thomas in the high jump, standing in for the injured Luke Ball.
There were a number of other good supporting performances and some filling in of empty events which kept the team points score ticking over.
The men’s 4×100 relay team secured a great second place while the women stormed to a convincing victory.
A full set of Officials for Yate enabled us to have the maximum Officials points once again, a testament to our dedicated and expert team who have travelled and supported the team at every match this season. The points they have added for the team have made the difference on many occasions. After assigning fair Officials points to each club and making a manual adjustment to the faulty OpenTrack scoring of the Women’s 4×100 relay, the final scores revealed Yate were agonisingly just two points behind Yeovil Olympiads who finished in first place and claimed the National One Division Champions title for 2022.
Many deserving thanks go to all those athletes and officials who have given their best throughout the season.

UK National Final for UAG YDL – Sunday 5th September 2022 at Sport City, Manchester

Team Avon came second – their highest finish ever!

Team Avon won a very secure second place in the YDL UAG National Final: Blackheath & Bromley Harriers AC 882.5, Team Avon 721.5, City of York AC 593.5, Trafford AC 544.5, Coventry & Leamington 549, Reading AC 462.  This was a terrific team effort and we can be proud of all our athletes.

Almost all our athletes won at least one medal and achieved personal best performances. Louis Tutcher won the Norma Blaine male ‘Athlete of the Match’ with a Grade 1 discus throw of 46.73m in the U17 men’s event. All in all, this was an OUTSTANDING achievement by the team and each athlete is to be congratulated on their contribution.

All four clubs within the composite team, were represented which was great, with athletes willing to step up and cover gaps where they could. There were 14 Gold medals won in the A string events: Willa Gibb U20 100H, Jake Cover U20 110H, Steve Kerfoot U20 2000S/C, Toby Conibear U20 Hammer, Megan Hornung U20 3000m, Jacob Dibble U20 Javelin, Sophie Hornung U20 Pole Vault, Lily Bailey U20 High Jump, Dominic Murray U20 High Jump, Dylan Stoneman U17 1500S/C, Louis Tutcher U17 Discus and Shot, Ethan Canning U17 Long jump, Matt Page U17 Hammer.

There were 20 gold medals won in B string events, as well as numerous silver and bronze medals.

Team Avon’s team of officials was the most qualified team at the final. Our officials, as usual, supported us extremely well and their expertise was very much appreciated by the athletes.

Team Avon has a tremendous team spirit. This result should encourage all our athletes and their coaches, to keep training hard this winter and we look forward to an equally successful 2023 season.

Respectfully submitted

Lesley Nunn, Women’s team manager

Sandra Woodman, Men’s team manager

SOUTH WEST VOLUNTEER AWARDS

Inspiring official – winner: Stuart Woodman

Starting events across the Midlands and the South West, Stuart Woodman’s knowledge and application of the rules has earned the trust and respect of athletes, parents and coaches alike and ensures the best of athletics comes to the fore at competitions. The enthusiasm he shows for his role has encouraged the next crop of officials to demonstrate their ability and exude a confidence at the meets they officiate. Stuart’s affable manner, good sense of humour and professionalism enable him to give the athletes the best possible event experience. The compassion and respect shown for the athletes under his authority is a tribute to the character and expertise he brings.

Community project of the year – runner-up: Yate AC

Yate AC’s project started out as an initiative to start sessions for disabled athletes, but it has since been taken to a new level. The project is now called Adaptive Athletics and it has made a massive difference in growing diversity and numbers at the club. Starting from scratch, one club member, Jim, has sought funding and obtained grants to buy equipment, fund facility hire and get coaches involved. The club now runs five sessions a week. Jim has also put in taster events as well as competitions and aims to grow a network of clubs in the South West. Congratulations to Jim and Yate AC.
