Youth Development League 2018 – Upper Age Groups U17 & U20
The Youth Development League Upper Age Group is an inter-club team competition for U17 and U20 athletes, though U17 athletes can also take part as U20s.
As you probably know five of the clubs within the Avon area (Bristol & West, Mendip, North Somerset, Team Bath, and Yate & District) have joined together to form a composite team called TEAM AVON.
Last season, we were division winners. Our aim this year is to reach the NATIONAL FINAL.
Team Avon will compete against the following teams: Cardiff AC, Cheltenham Harriers, Team DC (Devon & Cornwall), Swansea Harriers, and West Wales.
Athletes must be first claim members of their clubs to be eligible to compete for Team Avon.
The three league matches for 2018 are as follows:
29th APRIL – SWANSEA
27th MAY- CARDIFF
1st July – EXETER
PREMIER MIDLANDS REGIONAL FINAL 29th July – Kip Keino Stadium, Stoke Gifford.
Plus the National Final on 9th September (if we do well enough) and a chance to compete in Europe.
We believe that we can certainly make the area final. We have the athletic talent in Avon to win our division but we must have the commitment of you as athletes and the support of your coaches and parents to prioritise this league over other events. You have to compete in one of the league matches to be considered for the regional and national finals.
TEAM SELECTION: Jim Strudwick (women) & Sandra Woodman (men) select the team two weeks in advance of the competition. The top two ranked athletes are selected to score but there is some opportunity to compete as a guest as well.
It is VITAL that you complete the availability form (links to both forms above) and return it with your current PBs for your preferred events. We cannot select you if you do not tell us when you are available.
Team selections will be published by email, and athletes are expected to confirm receipt to the Team Managers.
Our first match is at Swansea so we want to get off to a good start. We will travel by coach to Match 1.
Please make sure you return your availability form in good time to be considered for team selection.
We will head to Swindon on 21st July, alongside Team Bath who finished last and Cheltenham who finished in 4th.
There we will meet the top 2 teams from the 2 south west divisions below us (there are 2 to accomodate the number of clubs) and they make up our 7 team final.
If we can finish in the top 2 we will remain in the premiership for another season, if not we will drop to one of the South West division 1’s where we compete next year (to be promoted again!).
There will be a coach on 21st, so please can you let me know asap your availability for the final and if you’ll be coming on the coach. As always It’s highly recommended the coach is taken both for team spirit and to guarantee arrival time… cost is £5 for an athlete and £10 for a family… athletes are able to travel without parents as I am on the coach.
I will be making strong changes to the team to try and give us the best chance of staying in the premiership so I apologise in advance if you don’t get selected or are selected for a different event. Should you not be selected please rest assured you will be put in for Avon Track and Field which begins on the 1st July, Please let me know your availability for that too!
To those Athletes who don’t get selected for Avon Track and Field it’s likely I’m saving you for the final and from a Coach and Team Manager perspective if I feel you need to rest, Please trust me!! Injuries are occurring and athletes are becoming tired because they are doing too much…. please, Please trust me. We can always discuss it further so please talk to me, I’m more than happy to do this and encourage it. My priority is always the health and safety of each and every athlete and this will never change!
Massive thank you to all that came, had a go, earned us valuable points, gave up fathers day(!), fought through the wind on the back straight, tried new things and achieved pb’s…. as always I am endlessly proud and you all constantly amaze me…
Any questions please ask and I’ll see you at the track for our continued training (even when the track shuts for refurb – we will still train!!!!)
This league is for athletes in school years 6-9
We need two male and two female athletes to compete for Yate in every event in both the U13 and U15 age categories.
