County Schools / Avon T&F League / Senior Midland Championships
It has been a busy weekend for athletes from Yate & District AC. The club had a host of young people – and some not so young people – at big meetings on both Saturday and Sunday.

AN AT-A-GLANCE GUIDE TO JUNES COMPETITIONS
FULL DETAILS FOR ALL THESE COMPETITIONS CAN BE FOUND…
As we start to get used to how we can better display our news items on this website, here is a small roundup of some of the things that have happened over the last couple of months…
Entries are now open for the Welsh Athletics Junior Open Regional Championships Day 1, which incorporates the South West England indoor championships. This event takes place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff on Sunday 3rd December and if you are looking for some early indoor competition over the winter this is the closest indoor arena to us (only around a 30-minute drive once you get across the Second Severn Crossing). It’s easy to get to and there are usually quite a few Yate athletes who go along.
The championships take place across two days (the second day is on Saturday 6th January). There are medals for the top three athletes in each age group from each region (South Wales, East Wales, South West England). As the turnout is often not huge from South West athletes, the chance of winning a medal can be pretty good! This year it seems that entry numbers for field events are capped at 40 athletes per event, with only 8 spaces allocated to South West England athletes. Entries close on November 17th.
The events available on December 3rd are:
U13 Girls – 200m, Long Jump, High Jump,
U15 Girls – 200m, 300m, Long Jump, High Jump
U17 Women – 200m, 300m, Shot Put, Triple Jump, High Jump
U13 Boys – 200m, Shot Put, High Jump
U15 Boys – 200m, 300m, Shot Put, High Jump
U17 Men – 200m, 400m, Shot Put, Triple Jump, High Jump
The cost is £6 per event for one or two events, and £5 per event if you enter three events. It is a well-run open, with parking on site for a small charge – arrive in good time though as it does get busy – seating for spectators, refreshments for sale as well as some small bits of kit, e.g. spikes, tape, rollers, and sometimes some clothing and shoes. There is usually a charge for spectators of around £3.
The entry process is quite straightforward – they are not even asking for an EA registration number! Go to Welshathletics.org/competitions or follow the link for more info and the online entry form: http://welshathletics.org/competitions/events/track–field/2017/december/welsh-athletics-junior-open–southeast-wales-regional-championships-day-1.aspx
Late notification of Adam Wilson’s 3rd in the Bedford CAU Inter County Championships and EA Senior Champs on 01/08/15 where he set a PB in the 1500m in 4.12.88 was 3rd in the race but second T20, so a great result!
Yesterday (15/08/15) David Thomas won the Welsh U15 high jump championships in a personal best of 1.67m. An excellent result in windy weather at the Newport Stadium after being stung by a wasp!
Yesterday Eviee Westwood won silver in the 200m Midland champs in a new PB
Finally Mark Lodge will be at the closing ceremony of the world CP games today in Nottingham where he has been a member of the GB coaching team all week. Mark was asked earlier in the year to become part of the coaching team for the week, follow his work at the Invictus games last year and his work with the other coaches this year.
This was only a week after we took delivery of 3 new race wheel chairs that Mark has arranged, which means we will be able offer more to potential wheel chair athletes. Thank you and well done.
Photos will follow once I have learned to load them up!
I am not too sure how well publicised the SW Champs at Exeter on 19th July have been and in particular the team selection, which includes quite a few Yate Athletes! Please double check the attached team Sheets and Standards, as weather you have been selected or are close to the standard and want to enter, you have to go on line and enter either way! If you are selected and want to enter another event too you can do this as well. Please note these team sheets are for Avon athletes, I am aware some of our athletes have competed for other counties, if this is the case still enter just make sure you note the county that you have competed for this year rather than Avon.
Three of our athletes were invited to the BIGs last weekend which is a great achievement in itself!
Adam Wilson put in another great performance in the 1500m coming third with yet another PB of 4:21:22 mins, whilst Beth Tucker was 3rd in her 200m with a PB of 31.64sec and 4th in the 100m with a PB of 14.62sec.
Jacob Spence has been in great form over the last two weekends with new PBs which would have put him well up the field, but we believe he pulled up in the 110mh so are awaiting news, we wish him a speedy return whilst congratulations to Beth and Adam.
Yvette Westwood continued her early season form by winning bronze, this time in the 200m in a new PB of 25.29. Her coach, Rob Ellchuck was particularly pleased that she did a Pb in the heat and then in the final, with her heat, semi and final all within 4 hrs (the semi only 55mins before the final).
Yate were well represented on the day, with Adam Brooks (PB HJ), Ellie Leather, Rob Dakin (PB 400m), Jamie Brock, Matt Muggeridge, Steve Beardwell, Kane Lee and Mark Cottam (PB 400m) all performing well.
Special mention must go to Adam in the high jump gaining a silver with a great jump of 1.88 (Still only 15) and Kane Lee who missed out on a medal in the 800m by only 0.62sec!
